Well I had to do a one page comic for some class at college. Inspiration came during the class from an irritating fat classmate. The disclaimer is ironic.
Ņeeeee is an irritating exclamation she does pretty much after every sentences she speaks. I'm sure as to what english expression to compare it.
The Fat Ass character design is inspired by the 2005's Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy movie depiction of the vogons and by Patrick Star.
I read it all, until it would show nothing but an impossible to negotiate text page. By the time I reached that point I had no desire to read anymore, nor was I impressed upon by any single or cumulative point raised by either faction. These Thirty perhaps Forty -some pages of struggle, apologetics, bitterness, and soul seeking, having left me quite numb.
What I am impressed with is how the Artist refrained from saying much at all. And like the rest of the Artists and their thousands of images of greater or lesser moral value here on Deviant, most of which I have seen, may the Lord bless you and your efforts to find clarity and communicate effectively through Art.
Throw a rock in the air, you'll hit someone guilty (U2). I pray you both (the Artist and "Rounded") have come to terms of forgiveness as with the rest of those who hold a grudge over this and the thousands of other possibilities here on DA, for all is vanity.
Nevertheless, I would like to have heard R.Crumb's thoughts on this image.
Before Fat Ass could do further damage to the universe.. 3..2..1.. Space Penguins reduced her into a smoldering pile of ashes! Then there was much rejoicing.. Yeah!!!
Ignoring the DD thing, since it's not the artist's fault they were nominated:
I think back to a staple I learnt in school: If you have to explain a piece, it's not very successful. Judging the picture just from first glance it just looks like a heavy girl sat down next to the guy, for some reason there's something mentally wrong with her so she can only make annoying sounds. I would have assumed this is in relation with her weight, since the artist is drawing specific attention to this with the title 'Fat Ass'. She's so annoying that space penguins come down and kill her, and the guy is happy. Based off that alone, is anyone surprised people would see this as offensive?
Every artist has to take into consideration that whenever their work is seen it won't necessarily have their artist comments attached. With that in mind, is the message getting across in the way the artist intended? There's nothing wrong with being annoyed with a classmate, lord knows I've had some grating ones. But drawing an entire comic about how much I hate them with the punchline being their death? It's a little excessive and kind of weird. If I had to choose, I would rather sit next to an obese mess that an only say "Ne" than someone who'll draw a comic of me dying if I piss them off.
It would have been just as funny if you had made it about an annoying model and it was called 'Skinny ass'. I love the gold cherubic pig at the end. It's like a full stop. LOL
I don't see how this is offensive at all, the title is "Fat Ass". So sure he's discriminating against fat people but no, he's not. This annoying classmate so happens to be fat, and the fat ass insult works on her. Calling one annoying person fat ass doesn't equate to calling all fat people fat asses.
It's not bullying either, because she had it coming. There is a certain extent to how much people can take, and she just went over the line. If you can resist not even insulting anyone in any way, whether in their face or not when they really annoy you to the core, then why don't you become a the next Buddha?
You'd think from all the negative comments that it was not a fat person but a person from the rainbow sextion of society that got vaporized... Great comic btw Light.
